Conservative Police and Crime Commissioner candidate, Donna Jones, has given a warm welcome to new a comprehensive package of anti-crime legislation recently introduced in parliament. The Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill will limit the automatic early release of offenders who pose a danger to the public, double the maximum sentence for assaults on emergency workers and extend Whole Life Orders for killing children. The bill also massively increases the penalties for criminal damage to a memorial from three months to ten years.
She said “This common-sense package of measures will strengthen penalties for a range of crimes and that will lead to safer communities and less crime.”
“Perhaps the most dramatic change is the increase in the penalties for damaging statues and memorials. That is overdue. Britain’s heritage deserves protection. The lawless trashing of memorials in Bristol and elsewhere last year must never be repeated.”
